Murchison Falls

At Murchison Falls, the mighty Nile crashes through a narrow 7-meter gorge, plunging 43 meters into the depths below—creating one of Africa’s most dramatic natural spectacles...

Murchison Falls, located in northwestern Uganda, is where the Nile River is squeezed through a mere 7-meter-wide rocky gorge before plummeting 43 meters down a sheer cliff into the river below. This breathtaking natural wonder produces a thunderous roar and a spectacular misty spray, with around 300 cubic meters of water per second forcing its way through the narrow passage. Originally called Kabalega Falls, the site was renamed by explorer Samuel Baker, who described the view in vivid terms in his book *The Albert Nyanza*: “The fall of water was snow-white, which had a superb effect and contrasted with the dark cliffs that walled the river, while the graceful palms of the tropics and the wild plantains perfected the view.” Today, visitors can hike to the top of the falls, take boat safaris along the Nile to witness the falls from below, or enjoy game drives through the surrounding Murchison Falls National Park, which teems with wildlife such as lions, elephants, giraffes, and hippos.
